A car went under in the Keating Channel on Saturday morning after crashing through the ice, prompting emergency reaction teams in Toronto to conduct a thorough water rescue operation.
On Saturday morning, emergency personnel in Toronto launched a thorough water rescue effort when a vehicle plunged through the ice into the Keating Channel. After an accident was reported around 8:45 a.m. near the intersection of Cherry Street and Lake Shore Boulevard East, the police were called to the scene.
According to investigators, an 18-year-old man was operating a Jeep and lost control, colliding with a Ford driven by a 32-year-old man. The impact caused the Jeep to veer off the roadway and break through the ice covering the Don River. Notably, no one was observed exiting the submerged vehicle at the time it entered the water.
Toronto Fire Capt. Deepak Chagger confirmed that the 18-year-old driver remained inside the Jeep as it crashed into the water. Despite hours of search efforts, authorities managed to recover a man believed to be the driver from the frigid water. The critically injured individual was swiftly transported to the hospital, where, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away, as reported by medical personnel.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was also taken to the hospital for medical attention. In response to the incident, road closures were implemented in the vicinity to facilitate the deployment of water response vehicles.
The aftermath triggered an investigation led by members of Traffic Services, aiming to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collision and subsequent water rescue. The tragic incident underscores the challenges posed by icy conditions and the critical importance of swift emergency response to such incidents.
